Premier League champions Manchester City head to Emirates Stadium on Sunday for a clash that has usually ended painfully for them.

The Citizens have not beaten Arsenal away in the league since Saturday October 4 1975, when a goal apiece for Asa Hartford, Joe Royle and Rodney Marsh saw off the Gunners 3-2 at Highbury.

The last time Roberto Mancini’s men travelled to meet Arsene Wenger’s side they went away defeated and thinking the title was out of their grasp, as rivals Manchester United had opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the Premier League.

City eventually turned it around dramatically but Mancini will be worries that his side just cannot seem to get to grips with the Gunners each time they are in north London in a league match.

A solitary Sergio Aguero goal in the 2011 League Cup delivered a victory for City, but there weren’t too many shouts as the big-spenders had been run very close by a weakened Arsenal side.

GMF has gone through the more recent clashes between the teams in the Premier League and picked out five of the most memorable.

Here they are…

Manchester City 4-2 Arsenal, Etihad Stadium – 12/09/09

It is safe to say Emmanuel Adebayor is not a favourite among Gunners fans and his first game against them would not have done a lot to change it. Here he scored a late goal to seal a three points and ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling Arsenal supporters.

A stamp on the head for Robin van Persie brought harsh words from the Dutchman and a three-game ban.

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal, Etihad stadium – 18/12/11

This match typified the kinds of game that usually ensues when these two play together, as it was tight but full of great quality. Some great opportunism from David Silva decided the game and a late goal from Robin van Persie was ruled out for offside.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal, Etihad Stadium – 23/09/12

The match earlier this season was an entertaining affair and the home side were fortunate to get away with a point. Vincent Kompany would later reveal on the BBC’s Match of the Day highlights programme that Arsenal were the best team they had played this season – how things can change.

Joleon Lescott’s first half header gave the champions the lead against the run of play and Wenger’s men thought they may rue some poor finishing before Laurent Koscielny lashed in the winner late on.

Manchester City 0-3 Arsenal, Etihad stadium – 24/10/10

The Citizens were still trying to find the right combination of players out of the mass purchasing that followed their takeover and were aiming for a first Champions League qualification place. Arsenal then still had title aspirations following their familiar late collapse the season before.

The early dismissal of Dedryck Boyata gave City a hill to climb, but the Gunners had one of those days where they seem unplayable and tore Mancini’s men to shreds. Goals from Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Nicklas Bendtner gave Wenger’s side a convincing win.

Arsenal 1-0 Manchester City, Emirates Stadium - 08/04/12

This was the moment Mancini conceded the Premier League title, only for his side to go on an incredible run of victories that would eventually see them win the championship in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Writing them off at the time was understandable as they had provided a lacklustre performance and were thoroughly outplayed by a then in-form Arsenal side. However, it wasn’t until three minutes from time when Mikel Arteta’s low 25-yard drive crashed in at the near post did the Gunners secure the points.

Further drama saw Mario Balotelli receive a second yellow card , though he could have been dismissed earlier in the game for a dreadful challenge on Alex Song.
