Manchester United host Liverpool in a classic Premier League encounter on Sunday, and the great rivals certainly have some history.
Whilst the game isn’t technically a derby, the illustrious history of both clubs means it still holds a place as one of the biggest games in English football.
It’s the Red Devils who hold the bragging rights in recent times however, with the Sir Alex Ferguson era seeing a major shift in power following the Reds’ league dominance in the 80s.
Indeed, the Premier League era has seen United lift 12 titles, and their total of 20 first division titles puts them one ahead of the Merseyside giants.

His hat-trick against the Reds proved the difference on this occasion, including a sublime overhead kick that left keeper Pepe Reina and manager Roy Hodgson stunned.

Paul Scholes marked his 500th appearance for Manchester United with a goal against their great rivals, as Ferguson got one over on old rival Rafa Benitez.
A sublime Rio Ferdinand strike was the standout moment however, with the centre back controlling a high ball in the box and firing into the top corner past Reina.

Not the greatest game of all time, but an unforgettable moment for United as David Beckham’s corner was only half cleared by David James.
His punch fell to Eric Cantona however, and the Frenchman volleyed through a crowd of defenders and into the net to hand United a famous victory underneath the Twin Towers.

Whilst ‘handshake gate’ was at the centre of the storm before the match, it was Wayne Rooney’s double which made the difference on the pitch.
The first was a close range finish from a badly defended corner, the second an expert finish through the legs of Reina after Antonio Valencia robbed Jay Spearing in midfield. Suarez’s consolation did little for Liverpool post-match.

A quite memorable day for Diego Forlan, but an unforgettable one for Jerzy Dudek as his howler proved to be costly on the big stage.
After dropping the ball to the Uruguayan to open the scoring, his powerful second was too hot to handle for the Pole. Sami Hypia’s late strike was again nothing but a consolation.
