Gerard Pique had a match to forget on FIFA 13 – receiving a red card and losing to Real Madrid when playing against the computer game's World Champion.
The Barcelona defender was taking on Alfonso Rios at the FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony, with the 24-year-old Los Blancos fan getting the chance to play the Spanish international centre back after winning an online competition to become the FIFA interactive King last year.
Alfonso was already 1-0 up moving towards half-time when Pique received a digital red, sent off for a rash challenge that left his side down to ten men and heading for a defeat.
Indeed, Rios capitalised on the situation, and ran out a comfortable 3-1 winner in-front of Lionel Messi, who rather enjoyed watching his team-mate get sent-off in embarrassing fashion. He probably didn't enjoy watching Cristiano Ronaldo score two goals though, even if it was in the virtual world.
"Winning the FIWC and getting the chance to attend the FIFA Ballon d'Or really is a dream come true. For any football fan this is without question one of the greatest experiences you can have,” said Alfonso after the battle, according to The Daily Mirror.
"Meeting my heroes and getting the chance to play FIFA 13 against Pique is something I will never forget."
And, despite the defeat, Pique was happy to heap praise on his opponent after the game, admitting that he needs a bit more practice before taking on the World Champions again.
He said: “Alfonso is the best player I have played against for sure. I don’t play FIFA as much as I’d like to, but I’m usually in the final against Leo (Messi) when we play at Barcelona so I’m not bad, but against Alfonso every player seems bad!”
Tito Vilanova will certainly hope his player doesn’t repeat the trick in real life when Barca meet Madrid for real in the second league El Clasico of the season.
