There are bad days at the office, then there are bad days at the office.

With Chelsea low on confidence after their 2-0 defeat against Swansea in the Capital One Cup earlier in the week, Stoke would have been thinking they could heap the misery on Blues boss Rafa Benitez and take home all three points.

Step forward Jonathan Walters. Before the game in an interview with the BBC's Football Focus, Liverpool full-back Andre Wisdom named the Stoke man as one of the toughest opponents he has faced in his short career. Probably not on this form though.

Walters should have known that it was going to be a long day when he tried to hook a shot towards goal only to wallop himself in the face with the ball. He allowed himself a rueful chuckle after that, but by the full-time whistle the laughter had turned to tears.

Soon after followed his first own goal of the day. And then came another. But fear not, Walters had a shot at redemption late on after Stoke won a penalty.

It wasn't enough to win the game, but could provide the vital boost to the Republic of Ireland player's confidence. All he had to to was slot the ball home, claim the consolidation goal and move on. But he skied it. Chelsea won the game 4-0 in the end, but at least Walters could say he scored more goals that Fernando Torres...
