Arsenal are reportedly preparing a bid for West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame as Arsene Wenger strives to reinforce his squad during the January transfer window.

Diame, who only joined the Hammers on a free transfer from Wigan in the summer, has a release clause written into his contract that will allow the Senegal international to leave Upton Park for cut-price fee.

According to The Sun, Arsenal could take advantage of this and are planning a £3.5 million bid for Diame, who has been out injured since West Ham's defeat to Liverpool in December.

West Ham, however, are reportedly attempting to negotiate an improved contract with Diame and increase his buyout clause, although it may prove to be too late if Arsenal make an approach.

Arsene Wenger is reported to be keen to bolster his Arsenal midfield with Mikel Arteta currently injured, while Abou Diaby's constant fitness problems will surely be a concern for the Gunners boss.

Diaby made his return for Arsenal in the loss to Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, having been sidelined since September with a thigh problem.
