€10m Chelsea striker target on Newcastle transfer radar
Chelsea transfer news: Bafetimbi Gomis linked with Newcastle move from Lyon
Newcastle United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign French striker Bafetimbi Gomis, according to reports.
Newcastle are in the market for a striker after losing Demba Ba earlier this month – ironically to Chelsea – with Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang also linked with a move to St. James’ Park.
Loic Remy was thought to be the Magpies’ main striker target after a fee was agreed for the player, but the Marseille star is set to join QPR later (today) in another transfer blow for Pardew.
Despite the addition of Ba at Stamford Bridge, interim manager Rafa Benitez has also been linked with Gomis, with the striker holding talks with the Blues in the past.
"Bafe has talked about Chelsea in the past as they seem a very prestigious club to him, but there are also other propositions,” said Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas at the weekend, according to Sky Sports.
"Of course, all the talk is about him moving to England, but there are other European clubs interested in him too.”
With 11 goals in 19 games for the Ligue 1 club so far this season, it’s easy to see why clubs in England are courting the player, and whilst the need appears to be greater at Newcastle, big-spending Chelsea can never be ruled out of a transfer race.
