Wenger confirms Arsenal interest in expensive Cavani

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are interested in signing Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, with both Manchester City and Chelsea reported to be keen on the 25-year-old.

However, the Gunners chief has thrown his hat into the ring after his side’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Swansea City, but acknowledges that the former Palermo star would cost the Emirates Stadium outfit a lot of money.

"Cavani is a player that I like. Will he cost a lot of money? That's for sure. Nobody would deny that. [But] our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player,” said Wenger, according to The Guardian.

Cavani has been in excellent form for Napoli this season, scoring 16 goals in Serie ‘A’ and 25 goals in all competitions from just 24 games.

The unusual admission from the Arsenal manager came during a press conference that also brought about a development on the Theo Walcott contract saga, with Wenger revealing a deal between the two parties is now very close.

"My optimism [regarding Walcott's new deal] is at 99 per cent now," he added on the England winger, according to Goal.com.

Arsenal have two weeks to complete their transfer business in January, and if Wenger does pursue the signature of Cavani, he knows it will cost a club-record fee in excess of the reported £15million spent on Andrey Arshavin.
