Manchester United have not given up hope of landing highly-rated Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen, according to reports.
The Daily Express claims Sir Alex Ferguson is still in the market for a midfielder, with the Danish international on the club’s radar despite transfer speculation going quiet in recent weeks.
Ferguson is on the search for a potential Paul Scholes replacement, according to the report, and Eriksen fits the bill as a player who can provide ‘finesse and quality’ from the centre of the park.
And, whilst his agent admitted recently that the player’s focus was fully on the task at hand with the Godenzonen, the door was left tantalisingly open for a potential move.
“Before Ajax's trip to Brazil (for their winter training camp), Christian's focus was on the big match coming up against Feyenoord and that is what he wants to keep focusing on,” said Martin Schoots, according to the Express.
“Christian just wants to concentrate on his football , but you never know what might happen in football.”
Eriksen has been in good form at the Amsterdam Arena this season, scoring five goals in all competitions for the Eredivisie outfit.
Manchester United have been aware of the player’s talents for some time however, and got a first hand look at the player in last season’s Europa League.
Indeed, Eriksen was a shining light at Old Trafford in his side’s 2-1 win over the Red Devils, although Ajax ultimately fell to a 3-2 aggregate defeat.
The 20-year-old isn’t the only young player to be linked with Manchester United this month of course, with Wilfried Zaha also on the club’s radar.
