Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has admitted that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is a player he would love to emulate in his football career.

The 32-year-old central midfielder has earned 100-caps for England to-date, and helped guide the Anfield outfit to success both domestically and in Europe for over a decade.

And, whilst 21-year-old Wilshere is still in the early stages of his career at the Emirates Stadium, he recognises that Gerrard is the perfect role model to aspire too over the coming years.

"I remember Steven Gerrard scoring a similar goal to mine in the FA Cup final against West Ham and also the Champions League game against Olympiacos. He is a great player, but I think I am a bit different - his long passing is better than mine," Wilshere is quoted as saying on Sky Sports, in reference to his match-winning exploits against Swansea.

"He has been the heartbeat of Liverpool for years. He has also been the stand-out performer for England as well. He is a great role model for me. If I can get anywhere near as good as him and drive the team forward like he does, then I will be happy.

"He was someone I looked up to when I was younger. He has 100 caps for England. For any young midfielder he is someone to base your game on and try to be like him."

Arsene Wenger will be hoping for another all-action display from the former Bolton loanee at the weekend, when the Gunners travel to Chelsea in a potentially crucial Premier League clash.

But, despite the hype surrounding his most recent performances, Wilshere is refusing to get carried away, and insists that his feet are kept firmly on the ground in north London.

"I have got a great family around me who keep me grounded. I don't see myself different to anyone else. I have to work hard," he added.

"I missed a year of football which is tough, particularly because I am a young player who was breaking through, but I am not where I want to be yet. I just want to work hard on my right foot, on my long passing, things like that and just get better and better."

Arsenal currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, six points off fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and a place in next season's Champions League.
