Arsenal are chasing promising young French midfielder Gilbert Imbula and could be ready to make an £8million move in the January transfer window.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been impressed by the 20-year-old who holds the record for the youngest player in Ligue 2 when he was just 17 years old.

Chelsea and Ligue 1 side Lyon are also mentioned as possible supporters, but his club Guingamp feel they can make a greater profit by selling to the Premier League and are hopeful of getting something close to their £8million valuation.

Imbula is a combative defensive midfielder and the interest of Arsenal could be to do with the lack of a natural in that position in the Emirates Stadium squad.

Mikel Arteta plays the role predominantly but is not a naturally defensive player and is injured, while Abou Diaby’s long standing injury problems make him unreliable, though he is also not a natural.

Francis Coquelin is more at home sitting in front of the defence but Wenger is yet to give him an extended run in the first team.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have a shortage of holding midfielders after losing Oriol Romeu to long-term injury and John Obi Mikel to the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana, so centre-back David Luiz has been forced to fill in there.
