Arsenal plot last-minute raid on £6.7m French defender

Published 2 Comments

Arsenal are planning an 11th hour bid to bring French defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to north London, according to reports.

The Daily Mirror claims Arsene Wenger has been scouting the player for over a year, and views the 23-year-old as competition for Carl Jenkinson should full-back Bacary Sagna leave the Gunners next summer.

However, Arsenal have reservations over the three-cap international, according to the report, and must now decide quickly if they want to bring the player to the Emirates Stadium as rivals Newcastle look to secure a deal.

Indeed, the Magpies have already agreed a £6.7 million fee for the player, the paper claims, and Yanga-Mbiwa is due to fly across the channel to discuss a move to St. James’ Park with Alan Pardew.

Having missed out on Loic Remy in similar circumstances, the Toon chief will be desperate to keep the Montpellier captain out of the clutches of Arsenal, despite Wenger’s long-term link to the versatile defender.

Were Yanga-Mbiwa to join the Gunners, he’d follow a path well trodden from Ligue 1 to the Premier League, with Olivier Giroud the most recent addition from the French top flight.
