David Moyes will be without right-back Tony Hibbert again due to a calf injury. Midfielder Darron Gibson is also out for the trip to struggling Southampton with a thigh injury; Kevin Mirallas has been missing from the squad since mid-November and is still out with hamstring problems - so too is defender John Heitinga who has missed the last two fixtures with a knee injury.

New Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino is without highly-rated midfielder Adam Lallana who has a kneee injury, and defender Jose Fonte is also unable to join the squad with a separate knee problem.

Hitzlsperger looks to prove media hype

Everton are on the edges of Champions League qualification and with a win tonight against Southampton, can go one point behind fourth place Tottenham.

David Moyes' Toffees have earned rave reviews from both the public and media for their attacking play and commitment to the cause; considering the money spent by clubs around them it's astounding indeed what Moyes has been able to achieve.

Thomas Hitzlsperger, speaking to the club's official website, said that Everton need to show the praise is not unfounded. "People will be watching us and expecting a lot from us because we've played so well in the past and that's what we've got to justify."

The German went on to talk about the importance of not underestimating the south coast club.

“There is a lot of confidence among the players now with the results we've had but we definitely won't underestimate Southampton. They're fighting for every point, they want to stay in this league and they're a good footballing side. But we have enough confidence to go there and say we want to win this game, and we've got every chance to do so,” he added.

In their last encounter, Everton came from one nil down to record a 3-1 victory at Goodison Park, and it will be interesting to see how the Saints respond to a new manager, and whether they will be able to start pushing their way up the Premier League table.
