Well, Sir Alex was right. He was quoted as saying that managers don't get enough time in the top flight, and I'm also pretty sure that Nigel Adkins would say exactly the same thing.

On Friday, Southampton sacked Nigel Adkins, replacing him with ex-Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino. Now for the majority of Saints fans, this may be completely baffling, and for the minority, perhaps a welcome appointment.

Adkins leaves St. Mary's having gained back-to-back promotions, taking the Saints from 22nd in League One to 15th in the Premier League - climbing a total of 51 places in England's football pyramid.

Southampton sit three points off the dropzone, having come from two goals down at Stamford Bridge to earn a credible 2-2 draw against the Champions of Europe, Chelsea.

I don't want to comment on mindless speculation, but perhaps the club's owner, Nicola Cortese, saw fit to sack Adkins during the transfer window in the hope that Southampton would bolster their squad before the month is out.

It all seems a bit swift though. Having learned on Friday morning that he had been sacked, Adkins' replacement was drafted in just minutes later. It seems as though Cortese had Pochettino lined up way before the transfer window had opened, perhaps showing a lack of respect towards the former boss and the success he had brought to St. Mary's during his two-and-a-half years at the helm.

I feel sorry for Adkins - just as the team have started to find their feet, he is sacked and replaced almost immediately. I'm sure that everyone at St. Mary's wishes him all the best for the future and i wish Pochettino all the best in replicating what Adkins achieved.
