Manchester United tracking French teen defender

Published 5 Comments

Manchester United are being linked with a summer move for Lille defender Lucas Digne.

The Daily Mail claims the Red Devils have made checks on the 19-year-old left-back, who has played at four different youth levels for the French national team.

Digne graduated to the Lille first-team squad in 2011, making 18 appearances in all competitions last season for Les Dogues.

The teenager has already surpassed that total this term however, becoming a regular for Rudi Garcia both domestically and in Europe.

His rapid Ligue 1 rise has led to subsequent transfer speculation, with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson linked with a move at the end of the season.

Compatriot Patrice Evra is currently in control of the position at Old Trafford, but at 31, the need for competition is great.

Alex Buttner is also available to Manchester United but yet to impress, whilst Brazilian Fabio has been allowed to leave on loan for the season.

Digne would provide Ferguson with a younger option, and continue the manager's more recent policy of buying players for the future.
