Tottenham Hotspur & Arsenal back in race for Ligue 1 playmaker

Published 1 Comments

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are back in with a chance of landing Moroccan attacking midfielder Younes Belhanda, according to reports.

TalkSPORT claims that the north London duo ‘could be encouraged’ to make a move for the 22-year-old, after switches to Inter Milan and Fenerbache hit the buffers.

"I've had no firm offer from Inter and we refused Fenerbahçe's offer to pay in three instalments,” Montpellier chairman Laurent Nicollin told Midi Libre.

And, whilst other publications subsequently claimed that the Serie ‘A’ giants had made an offer and agreed a fee for the player, technical director Marco Branca insists that the claims are unfounded.

"Sorry to contradict the president of Montpellier, but Inter have never submitted a bid for his player, Younes Belhanda,” he told the official Inter website.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has been heavily linked with a move for Belhanda in January, although Nicollin confirmed last week that no official bid had been lodged by the White Hart Lane outfit.

"Tottenham Hotspur's interest? There has been nothing official as yet, but I would like there to be," he told L'Equipe.

Were the player to join Spurs, he’d add options across the midfield, with a capability of playing in either a central of wide role for the club.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are in the market for players, with Arsene Wenger confirming earlier in the week that he wants two new additions at the Emirates Stadium before the end of the transfer window.

And, if Belhanda joined the Gunners, he’d follow a long line of players who have swapped Ligue 1 for north London.

Indeed, striker Olivier Giroud was the last man to make the switch, ironically leaving the French champions to join Wenger in the Premier League.

Whether Tottenham would be willing to let one of their transfer rivals join a great rival is up for debate however, and a transfer battle could ensue if one of the teams decided to make their move.
