Barcelona star keen on La Liga v Premier League showdown
Barcelona news: Gerard Pique keen on La Liga v Premier League All-Star game
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is keen on a pre-season ‘All-Star’ game between Premier League and La Liga players, saying it would be ‘quite a spectacle’.
Calls for a game between eleven of the best players from each league intensified after the FIFA/FIFPro World XI, which was made up entirely of players from the Spanish league, was announced last month.
One popular British newspaper called for the game to take place in order to see if La Liga players were truly superior to their Premier League counterparts, and now Pique has joined in on the fun by revealing he would be interested in taking part in an All-Star game.
“It would be quite a spectacle for the fans and very nice for the players to play in a game featuring the 22 best players from the two leagues,” he said.
Pique's Barcelona team-mate Cesc Fabregas is also keen on the idea, and has reportedly been stoking the fires in the Catalan club's dressing room.
While Pique may be keen on playing the extra game in pre-season he is likely to have his hands full when he's away from the football pitch from now on – the 25-year-old announced the arrival of Milan Pique Mebarak, his first child with pop-star Shakira, this morning.
