Chelsea news: Eden Hazard kicks Swansea City ball boy during League Cup semi-final
Chelsea’s season went from bad to worse last night (Wednesday), when Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard kicked a Swansea City ball boy during his side’s League Cup semi-final exit at the Liberty Stadium.
Trailing 2-0 from the first leg at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were becoming frustrated as the goalless second-half moved towards the closing stages.
And, in a rush to get the game restarted, Hazard appeared to try and kick the ball from underneath a ball boy in the 80th minute, giving the youngster a knock in the ribs in the process. Referee Chris Foy automatically produced a red card.
"The boy put his whole body on to the ball and I was just trying to kick the ball. I think I kicked the ball and not the boy. I apologise," the player told Chelsea TV after the 0-0 draw.
Manager Rafa Benitez admitted his player was wrong after the incident, but felt that the situation arose because the boy – who is only five years younger than Hazard - was trying to waste time for the Swans.
"They both recognise there was a mistake. The boy was apologising for time wasting. Hazard was frustrated and tried to get the ball. He was kicking the ball and getting the ball,” the Spaniard is quoted as saying by the BBC.
"We can analyse if for half an hour but we know that both are wrong. We will deal with it internally, that's all I can say."
