Liverpool have made an improved offer for Brazilian midfielder Phillipe Coutinho, according to reports.

The Daily Telegraph claims Brendan Rodgers has lodged an £8million bid for the one-cap international, after an initial offer of £6million was rejected at the end of last week.

However, the Reds are not willing to enter a bidding war with Southampton, according to the paper, and the latest offer to Inter Milan will be the club's last.

Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino is reported to have made a £10million bid for the 20-year-old, who worked under the Argentine at Espanyol last season.

Liverpool have been in negotiations with the Serie ‘A’ giants over the last 48 hours however, and remain confident the playmaker will move to Merseyside ahead of the south coast.

Coutinho would be the second signing of the January transfer window for Rodgers if he can secure a deal, with Daniel Sturridge joining at the start of the month in a £12million deal.

The England international has been a big hit since arriving at Liverpool, and the manager will hope that Coutinho can have a similar impact if he arrives in the next seven days.
