Gervinho produced a spectacular goal with the outside of his right foot to lead Ivory Coast to a 2-1 win over Togo in the African cup of Nations - A goal of class, composure and imagination.

The problem is when playing for Arsenal, Gervinho has failed to exhibit anything near the poise he has expressed so regularly for the Ivory Coast.

In three games in 2013 for Ivory coast,  the  25 -year- old has scored three times, twice in a practice game and his strike against Togo.

For Arsenal in the 2012 - 2013 season, the tricky attacker has just five goals in all competitions from 15 appearances. Not much to write home about for the former Lille man who was captured for 10 million pounds in 2011.

At crucial times, Gervinho has been guilty of losing his ‘marbles’ in front of goal, shown by his first touch deserting him, in a Premier League home game against Manchester City - the game ended 1-1. Against an inferior Bradford City in the English Capital one cup, he inexplicably turned a ball wide when a mere five yards from goal - Arsenal went on to lose that game on penalties.

In Gervinho's defence, it must be said that for Arsenal he plays a different role to the one he plays for the national side, playing out wide for the Gunners, and for Ivory Coast Gervinho plays more centrally; it seems he’s being groomed as Didier Drogba’s long term successor as the point man for Ivory Coast.

A successful cup of nations could change the attacker’s fortunes at Arsenal, but he will find it difficult to displace Theo Walcott, who has plundered 15 goals so far this season. Oliver Giroud for the moment seems like Arsene Wenger’s top choice as centre forward, largely because of his aerial ability and is inability to play anywhere else.

To make his Emirates stay long and fruitful Gervinho will probably need to accept his role as a wide attacker, and become more merciless in-front of goal.
