Reading doubt that Andrey Arshavin will be joining the club in January

.

Reading manager Brian McDermott has distanced himself from reports linking the Royals with Arsenal midfielder, Andrey Arshavin.

The newly-promoted side have long been linked with the Russian international in recent times, and having only played in seven games this season, Arshavin may well look to move on from north London.

McDermott has publicly stated his desire to bring in some experienced faces to help Reading in their battle against relegation, but the manager has all but ruled out signing 31-year-old Arshavin.

"It's one that I've heard many times," he told Sky Sports News HD.

"He's an Arsenal player. I don't think he will be a Reading player."

Despite denying Arshavin coming in, McDermott hasn't ruled out making some signings this window.

He said: "We haven't broken the bank, I certainly haven't in the last three years and we probably haven't in the last 12 years as a club.

"That's not to say that if a player came in that we felt was right for us, at the right cost, then the owner would have to make a decision to back that deal. Then we will wait and see.

"It's not a case of we wouldn't if it was right."

With the transfer window coming to a close in less than a week, and a game against Chelsea on Wednesday, any moves will have to be finalised quickly.
