Wenger plays down David Villa link
Arsenal transfer news: Arsene Wenger said Arsenal are not pursuing Barcelona star David Villa
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has played down reports linking the Gunners with Barcelona forward David Villa, insisting his side are "not on the case" when it comes to pursuing the Spain star.
The former-Valencia striker has struggled to regain his place in the Barcelona first-team since recovering from long-term injury, and Villa was on the bench once again last night as the Catalan club progressed to the Copa Del Rey semi-final with a 6-4 aggregate victory over Malaga.
Speculation has linked the Spanish international with a move to the Premier League, but Wenger revealed Arsenal are not pursuing the 31-year-old.
"We are not on the case," Wenger is quoted as saying on Goal.com. "We want to make things happen from inside the club. We have the resources to do well."
The Gunners boss also commented on the general difficulty of doing business in January - in his opinion the winter window comes with much more risk than its summer counterpart.
"The gamble is much bigger than during the summer. The number of players you are allowed to sign should be limited."
Villa broke his leg in a FIFA Club World Cup match in 2011 - an injury which kept him out of action for eight months.
He returned at the beginning of this season, but despite a number of impressive performances, including 10 goals, Villa has played second fiddle to Pedro and Alexis Sanchez.
But Barca boss Tito Vilanova could reasonably point to his side's form - why change a winning team after all - and the Nou Camp giants are storming away with La Liga this season - they sit eight points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, and a massive 15 points ahead of Real Madrid.
