Despite Liverpool having been unable to reach the top four in the last three seasons, captain Steven Gerrard still feels privileged to play for the Merseyside club.

Since joining as a nine-year-old, Gerrard has made played over 600 games for the Merseysiders, placing him just behind former defender Alan Hansen in tenth on the list of Liverpool's all-time appearance makers.

The 32-year-old has also scored an impressive 155 goals for his boyhood team, 86 of which he has netted in the Premier League.

The midfielder told the club's official website: "It is the club I have supported since I was a boy and I'm in such a privileged position to captain the team.

"It [move to Chelsea] was very close but I have no regrets and am absolutely delighted I stayed loyal to Liverpool."

Gerrard, also known as Stevie G, has led the club to every major cup final victory, including a amazing win over AC Milan in the Champions League final in 2005.

Despite the Premier League being the England international's only medal missing from his cabinet, he believes that the reason he has stayed for so long is because Liverpool have kept the faith in him.

Gerrard added: "A lot of people talk about my loyalty to Liverpool but what rarely gets mentioned is Liverpool's loyalty to me.

"I've been there since I was eight and the contracts kept coming, the love kept coming, they have always supported me on and off the pitch."

The Liverpool skipper, who has 100 caps for England, has started every league game this season, and despite his few mistakes over 23 years at the Reds, he is grateful that the club have stuck by him.

Gerrard said: "A football career s like a roller coaster, it is up and down and you earn from your mistakes on and off the pitch.

"But no matter what I have done I've always had fantastic people around me at the club. I think Liverpool deserve a big thank-you from myself for the loyalty they have shown to me."
