Double blow: Aston Villa suffer second cup exit
John Marquis piles more misery onto Paul Lambert and Aston Villa with last-minute winner
Last week couldn't have been much worse for Aston Villa supporters, who have seen their floundering team exit both domestic cups to lower league opposition in the space of a few days.
Villa made a promising start to their FA Cup fourth round tie with Millwall at the New Den, as a rare start for Darren Bent in the absence of Christian Benteke led to a 22nd minute goal for the visitors.
The respite the goal afforded Villa was not set to last, however, with Millwall answering back five minutes later with a goal from a Danny Shittu header - further highlighting Villa's defensive frailties from set-pieces.
While the game continued at a deadlock until the Lions' 89th minute winner was scored by John Marquis, it did not pass without incident, with a brief delay being caused in the second-half as a result of fans throwing bottles onto the pitch - reportedly aimed at a linesman.
There was also a yellow card for Villa's Jordan Bowery for an elbow to Shittu, as well as bookings for Villa left-back Joe Bennett and Millwall's Mark Beevers.
Coming just days after the embarrassing Capital One Cup semi-final exit at the hands of lowly Bradford, Aston Villa have played Goliath in two of the season's biggest cup giant killings, and for many the blame lies squarely at the door of manager Paul Lambert.
With both cups now out of reach and the team languishing just outside of the relegation zone with just 20 points from 23 league games, Lambert's future has been called into question by fans and the media alike, with many wondering if this loss to Millwall could be the final straw for the Villa board.
What do you think? Should Villa sack Lambert following another defeat? Or should they stand by the man they lured to Villa Park from Norwich City in the summer? Leave a comment and let us know.
