Has Africa lost its football flair? What are the reasons behind the below-par performances of Africa's top teams?
That is the question that lingers amongst us African football fans.
The biggest African spectacles have been reduced to stale draws, poor performances and empty stadiums.
African football was once celebrated across the continent with the grounds at full capacity, with fans passionate about their country and the game.
But now those days are nothing but a distant memory. Fans have lost the desire to support their national teams because they have become a bitter disappointment and the players lack the drive and passion to play for their nation.
African football was about dribbling, showing skill and running at opponents. Now it's plagued by long-balls and diving. What happened to the Tsamaya and Shibobo music that used to drive the fans crazy and wild?
The opening game of the African Cup of Nations, featuring hosts South Africa, was disappointing not only to the coach and staff, but to the thousands of fans that made their way to the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg in the cold and rainy weather. There was also more than 40 million South Africans glued to their television screens hoping to see the first goal of this year's AFCON, but it never came.
The fans, including myself, lost hope and faith in the national team but as patriotic as South Africans are, we still believe and support our boys, despite their lacklustre performances.
This support paid dividends, as they came back in their second game and played the kind of football that they are known for, lifting the entire nation and beaming us with pride.
However, some of the 'big' nations as they are referred to failed to live up to the expectations of football lovers across Africa, with similar below-par performances, lacking the passion that the continent has been thriving on.
Has the rhythm of African football died or is there still life in football on the continent? What do you think? Get in touch, leave a comment below.
