With the Italian veteran labelled as the saviour to what is a league deteriorating in quality, Sydney’s new marquee signing was set to boost crowd numbers immensely. 

With Del Piero’s fame well known in Australia, many were relishing the opportunity to witness the former Juventus superstar ply his trade in the national league, finally giving the fans some much needed excitement and development of the game in Australia.

The former Old Lady captain achieved the miraculous feat of 513 caps for the Italian giants, finally ending his 19-year cameo with the club to become a free agent at his own will. 

His decision for joining Sydney was humble, to make a contribution and let the game that he loves grow - the remarks of a truly extraordinary footballer.

His grace and quality on the ball was seen from day one, as countless defence splitting passes and world-class movement, produced by the Italian, had fans screaming for more as he truly personified the beautiful game. 

Such form lead many to believe Sydney would be title contenders if form permitted. 'ADP' has sent fans into a hysteria since his arrival, proving that class has no age barrier.

After a somewhat purple patch of form and numerous rumours surrounding the early departure of the veteran from his Sydney club, Del Piero put all doubters to shame, playing an instrumental role in Sydney's 7-1 demolition of Wellington Phoenix.

Picking up a first-half hat-trick, followed by a majestic second-half strike that added to Wellington's woes, Del Piero finished off the night with a standing ovation from the crowd following his substitution.

The Juventus great has amassed a staggering nine goals in 14 games for the Sky Blues thus far, a very respectable achievement for a player coming into the twilight of his career.

Where the future lies for this footballing immortal is unknown. One thing is for certain - his enrichment of Australian football will forever live in the hearts of fans, as they can truly say they have witnessed one of the greats in action.
