Arsenall boss admits defeat in Barcelona striker chase
Arsenal transfer news: Arsene Wenger says Barcelona won't sell David Villa
Arsene Wenger has revealed he won't be trying to sign David Villa this month, because Barcelona are unwilling to part company with the Spanish striker.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for numerous forwards in the January transfer window, and are said to be keen on taking Villa to the Emirates Stadium.
The Spanish international is reportedly unhappy at the Camp Nou with his lack of game time since returning from a broken leg at the start of the season, and is said to be eyeing a move to the Premier League.
However speaking at a press conference this morning, Wenger confirmed that Barcelona were unwilling to negotiate over the possible transfer of Villa – although denied he was ever interested in the former Valencia player.
The Frenchman said: “Barcelona don't want to sell, they've made that clear. I said they don't want to sell, I didn't say he was a target."
Wenger also denied that he would make a move to sign David Beckham. The former England captain is currently unattached after leaving LA Galaxy and is training with the Gunners.
Asked what Arsenal are getting out of the arrangement, Wenger replied: "Nothing. Questions in a press conference!"
Wenger did admit that he is still in the market for new signings, and is hopeful of some new arrivals before the end of the window on Thursday.
“We are still trying, but it's hard to sign players in January who can improve you," he said.
