Joan Verdu of Espanyol has been a target for a number of teams, with links to clubs as diverse as Atletico Madrid, Southampton and MLS outfit, Seattle Sounders FC.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who started his career at Barcelona, was subject to a lot of rumours Stateside prior to the Sounders' signing of Christian Tiffert last year, and is now believed to be one of the players Southampton's new coach Mauricio Pochettino would love to get his hands on.

Pochettino is hoping to make some urgent signings to help the struggling Premier League team see out the season safe from relegation, and is believed to be very keen on Verdu, with the Spanish player reported to be at the top of his target list along with Anderlecht's Lucas Biglia.

However Verdu's agent, Magico Diaz, has strongly indicated that the player's preference is to stay at Espanyol when his contract expires in the summer - even if it means settling for less money than the likes of Atletico Madrid, Southampton or Seattle Sounders can put up for him.

"He has given me instructions that negotiating a new deal is the main priority," Diaz stated.

"By talking, creative solutions can be found," he added, when discussing the probability that Verdu would have to compromise financially to stay at Espanyol.

"I can assure everyone that there has been no type of early agreement made with anyone."

With Verdu's outstanding performances at Espanyol since arriving on a free transfer from Deportivo La Coruna in 2009, it is likely that they will be as keen as he is to reach a suitable agreement to allow him to stay.
