While the term 'club in crisis' is one that can sometimes be bandied about a little too often, Aston Villa are certainly a club whose fans could use some good news right now.
Having been unceremoniously dumped out of both domestic cups by lower league teams last week, the only objective left for the Villans seems to be to try and avoid Championship football next season.
Many Villa fans may have been holding out hope that some good signings in the current transfer window could rejuvenate the team and help dig them out of their bad run form, but sadly, manager Paul Lambert has announced that he isn't anticipating any acquisitions before the window closes on Thursday.
The lack of January signings is something the ex-Norwich City manager puts down to both a lack of funds, and his top targets being snatched by other teams.
"At this minute there's not much really happening," said Lambert. There's been guys we went for who have gone to other clubs.
"How many players are we short? There's a few. But I knew the remit of the job was to rebuild. To rebuild something you have to strip it right back.
"But if you are asking me if there will be a vast amount of money available during the rest of the transfer window, there won't be."
In the face of speculation that the lack of money available to bolster the team this January means owner and chairman Randy Lerner is no longer prepared to back Aston Villa, Lambert claimed the club still has Lerner's full support.
"Has Lerner washed his hands of Villa? No, the one thing is he's not washed his hands of it," Lambert proclaimed. "If he has got other commitments, that's entirely up to himself, if he has got other things on.
"But he's definitely behind the club. He wouldn't have done what he's done if he wasn't committed to it."
Of course, the "we have the full support of our ownership" line is one we have heard many times before from managers in trouble.
What all of this means for the future of Aston Villa, its owner and its coach, is something that we'll just have to wait and see.
