Emanuel Pogatetz joins West Ham United on loan

.

Yesterday, West Ham United confirmed the loan signing of Emanuel Pogatetz from VfL Wolfsburg for the rest of the season.

The 30-year-old has spent most of his career in the Bundesliga, having played at Bayer Leverkeusen, Hannover 96 and Wolfsburg.

However, Pogatetz has featured in the Premier League, spending five seasons at Middlesbrough between 2005 and 2010.

The Austrian international has also earned over 50 caps for his country and has been a part of Austria's World Cup 2014 qualification efforts.

Pogatetz has made just eight appearances for the Wolves this season, but is keen to show that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level during his upcoming loan spell with the Hammers.

The defender expressed his excitement about returning to the Premier League and showing what he can do.

Pogatetz told West Ham's official website: "I feel very good to be here and I am very excited about playing for West Ham.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to play for the club and help it get good results.

"I will be doing my best to play well and hope I can play a part in the club achieving the targets for this season."

Pogatetz has a wealth of experience, having made over 150 appearances for Middlesbrough, helping the Riverside Stadium outfit to the UEFA Cup final in 2006.

He added: "First of all when I heard that West Ham wanted me, I thought it was a club I wanted to play for because they are a very traditional club, with passionate supporters.

"Secondly, it was good for me to have the opportunity to come back and play in England. This is the football I want to play and I have missed playing here, I want to show what I am still capable of after five years playing in Middlesbrough."

Pogatetz is a versatile defender who West Ham can deploy either at centre-back or left-back. This should hopefully add some valuable depth to the Hammers' defence for the remainder of the season.
