A brace from England left-back Leighton Baines helped Everton to a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Shane Long pulled one back for the Baggies after Baines put the hosts 2-0 up with a penalty just before half-time.

The opening 20 minutes saw chances at both ends, with Romelu Lukaku's effort being well saved by Toffees keeper Tim Howard, whilst Kevin Mirallas fired just wide for the Toffees.

However, Everton found the breakthrough as Leon Osman teed up Baines to smash a cracker into the top corner, out of Ben Foster's reach.

West Brom attempted to equalise straight away, but Baggies' striker Lukaku was unable to beat the offside trap. This began a streak of bad luck that effectively cost West Brom the game, as George Thorne had to be stretchered off after an innocent challenge by Everton's Leon Osman.

His replacement, Claudio Yacob, didn't get off to the best of starts, fouling Victor Anichebe in the penalty area five minutes later. Former Wigan Athletic defender Baines stepped up and rifled it past Foster.

Twenty minutes after the break, Belgian hit-man Lukaku had two shots blocked by Everton's Dutch defender Johnny Heitinga, before rounding Howard to shoot. Heitinga tried to control the ball, yet he could only lift it into the path of Long.

The Irishman composed himself to head from close-range. Dorrans almost equalised straight after, but his free-kick could only rattle the crossbar.

Everton turned defence into attack immediately, as Osman shot from close-range, but saw it rise over the bar.

Albion boss Steve Clarke introduced Swedish international Markus Rosenberg late on in an attempt to take home a point, but the Everton back-four held firm to claim their fourth win in eight games.

The victory also sees the Goodison Park outfit move to within a point of the Champions League places, while West Brom remain in ninth, after their fourth defeat in five matches.
