Rooney nets 100th goal at Old Trafford

Published 2 Comments

Wayne Rooney enjoyed a night to remember at Old Trafford last night, netting twice in a 2-1 win against Southampton.

It wasn’t your ordinary brace for Rooney either, with the England striker enjoying two ‘milestone’ moments against the Saints.

The first goal, a smart finish past Artur Boruc after Shinji Kagwa’s clever chipped pass, made it 100 at home for the Red Devils.

Rooney joined the Red Devils in 2004, and his first goals were a hat-trick in the Champions League victory against Fenerbache.

In the nine years that have followed, Rooney has scored some unbelievable goals in front of the home fans; most notably the volley against Newcastle in April 2005 and the overhead kick against Manchester City in February 2011.

His second goal, a close-range finish after Patrice Evra’s header across goal, made it 138 strikes in the league for United – surpassing club legend George Best in the process.

Rooney is now sixth in that particular list, with Sir Bobby Charlton, Jack Rowley, Denis Law, Dennis Viollet and Joe Spence ahead of him.

Spence, who is fifth on the list, sits 20 goals ahead of Rooney, whilst Charlton’s total of 199 remains the ultimate mark for Manchester United players to aspire too.
