Liverpool is the first choice destination for Lazio defender Modibo Diakite, according to the player's agent, with the Frenchman set to become a free agent during the summer transfer window.

Diakite is out of contract with Lazio at the end of the season and is expected to end a seven year association with the Italian giants, having moved to Rome as a teenager.

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool will look for defensive reinforcements in the summer ad doubts remain about the future of Jamie Carragher at Anfield, and Diakite could be one of Brendan Rodgers' additions.

The 25-year-old's representative Ulisse Savini says Liverpool are the leading candidates to sign his client when his contract expires, and a transfer to Anfield would be Diakite's priority.

But, adds Savini, there is still plenty to be resolved before Diakite can agree terms with the Merseyside club.

"Liverpool is our first option for June," Savini told tuttomercatoweb.com.

"It's in issue in progress and we have to talk yet.

"Everyone knows that the contract is expiring. Also, Lazio know there is no hurry.

"We'll see in the coming days. However, it would be hard to say no to Liverpool."

Should he move to Anfield, Diakite would provide competition for centre-backs Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, who have established themselves as Rodgers' first-choice duo.
