A number of Brazilian football fans have been injured after a human avalanche celebration caused a fence to collapse at Arena do Gremio, in Porto Alegre, during Wednesday's Copa Libertadores clash between Gremio and Liga de Quito.

Elano's 16th minute wonder goal triggered the trademark reaction from the home faithful, which is common all over South America and involves supporters running down the terraces en masse towards the front, creating the impression of an avalanche.

But, the celebration went horribly wrong this week as the fence behind one of the goals gave way as supporters rushed forward, causing several people to fall into the ditch that separates the pitch from the terraces, with a total of eight people suffering minor injuries.

Gremio went on to win the match 1-0, before beating their Ecuadorian opponents on penalties, with the qualifier level at 1-1 on aggregate.

The stadium where the incident happened is not among the venues for this year's Confederations Cup or next year's World Cup in Brazil, but a public enquiry is expected to determine the reason for its occurrence.
