With Real Madrid missing several key players such as Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Fabio Coentrao, Barcelona were tipped as favourites ahead of the latest instalment of El Clasico.
However, young Frenchman Raphael Varane had other ideas.
After putting in a fantastic performance, the former Lens star capped off a fine display with an excellent goal.
After Mesut Özil's cross, Varane dominated the air in front of Barca's goal and produced a powerful header past the helpless Jose Manuel Pinto.
Everything was perfect during Varane's game.
He barely misplaced a pass, produced some amazing tackles, made a goal-line clearance to deny Barca and dominated in the air. It's incredible to think that he is only 19-years-old.
Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka told the club's official website: "He played a perfect match."
Varane has recently put in some top class performances at centre-back for Los Blancos, having made seven appearances in the league since December.
Karanka was also pleased with the outcome of the game, despite needing to beat the Catalan giants at the Nou Camp in the return fixture.
Karanka added: "The whole team did an amazing job, even with players out of position. Now we have to rest and think about Granada.
"It is a long time until the second leg and there will be time to prepare."
The second leg of this Copa del Rey semi-final clash will be on the 27 February, with Barcelona having an away-goal advantage with the scores tied at 1-1.
