Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has been charged with assault, stemming from an incident which took place in November involving a 27-year-old woman, according to the Daily Mirror.

Sterling was 17 when the alleged assault took place and knows the individual who is pressing charges against him.

Mick Hogan, a solicitor who appeared on the England international's behalf, stated that the 18-year-old will deny the charge.

Hogan said: "I do have instructions to the effect that Mr Sterling will be pleading not guilty to this charge.

"He is aware of today's hearing and the club are very supportive.

"Mr Sterling turned 18 in December and the alleged offence was committed in November when the defendant was 17.

"I indicated to Merseyside Police that our view was the correct venue would be the magistrates court. The key to this is the age of the defendant when he makes his first appearance.

"He should be in an adult court."

Sterling has been selected for England U21 duty next week when they take on Sweden, but the hearing will seemingly have no affect on his availability for the match.

It is unclear how the charge will affect Sterling for the rest of the season or his potential involvement in the U21 European Championships in the summer.

Sterling has been one of Liverpool's most impressive players this season after being fast-tracked into the first-team by manager Brendan Rodgers, and he recently signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Being one of Liverpool and England's brightest prospects, there will be many people interested in the case as it continues.

Sterling's case has been adjourned for three weeks and will next appear before Liverpool Magistrates Court later this month.
