Former Liverpool goalkeeper Alexander Doni has revealed he suffered a heart attack during the summer.
There has been much speculation as to why Doni didn't feature in any of the Reds' squads since the final day of the 2011/12 season, but the Brazilian stopper has now spoken out.
According to Liverpool, his long absence from the squad was due to personal reasons, and the club have since refused to comment on Doni's revelation.
Doni secured a move back to his homeland with Botafogo on deadline day, and the keeper explained that the problems began whilst undergoing medical tests at the club.
Speaking to calciomercato.com, Doni said: "I almost . . . I almost ended up on the other side. I had a heart attack for about 25 seconds.
"I've been to one of the best doctors in Europe who looked at me carefully. He's asked me to stop for a few months.
"Now I have to stay put until April, then I can return to the field, I want to play in the 2014 Paulista championship."
Doni also told Brazilian broadcaster Globo: "I always had an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and during some tests in Liverpool suffered a cardiac arrest.
"I carried out checks across Europe and I had to extend my period of absence from the field."
Doni rarely featured for Liverpool during his time at Anfield, playing second fiddle to first-choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
The Spaniard has come under increased criticism in recent weeks after a string of high-profile mistakes, including an error which lead to Manchester City's equalising goal in Sunday's 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
