Rooney pays tribute to ‘good mate’ Ashley Cole
Wayne Rooney congratulates Ashley Cole ahead of 100th England cap against Brazil
Wayne Rooney has led the tributes to England teammate Ashley Cole ahead of the left back’s 100th international appearance.
The Chelsea defender is set to become the seventh player to reach three-figures for his country, following in the footsteps of legendary players like Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore and David Beckham.
And, ahead of the game against Brazil at Wembley tomorrow night, Rooney was more than happy to heap some praise on the 32-year-old.
“Congrats to my good mate Ashley Cole on his 100th appearance for England tomorrow. Been a top player for England over the years... Nice one Ash,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.
Cole made his Three Lions debut against Albania in March 2001, and has been one of the nation’s most consistent performers for over a decade.
He has represented England at five major international tournaments.
Rooney, meanwhile, has earned 78 caps for his country, with the Manchester United striker scoring 32 goals in the process. His debut came in the 3-1 defeat to Australia back in February 2003.
Both players are still in the plans of manager Roy Hodgson, and will expect to feature in England’s remaining qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.
