Cavani ‘knows nothing’ about Arsenal interest

Published 6 Comments

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani insists that he is unaware of interest from Arsenal.

The Premier League outfit are one of a number of clubs to be linked with the Uruguayan, with Chelsea and Manchester City also reported to be keen on the 25-year-old.

However, the former Palermo star insists he knows nothing with regards to the north London outfit’s pursuit, and is contracted to his current club for another four years.

The 45-cap international did hint at interest in a move to Spain though, admitting Real Madrid and Barcelona both ‘stimulate the imagination’.

"I know nothing about Arsenal's interest. I have only heard about it now,” Cavani told Radio Onda Cero.

"My future? I have a contract for four years but in football you never know what to expect. Barcelona  and Real Madrid  are teams which stimulate the imagination, but I only think about the present.

"I'm living the highest point of my career with Napoli and I want to concentrate on fighting for the scudetto. Along with my team-mates, we want to give a dream for our people."

Cavani’s comments would suggest that reports in Spain today, claiming Real Madrid are currently negotiating a deal for the player, are premature.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, admitted an interest in the player during the January transfer window, but recognised that the player would command a huge transfer fee.

"Cavani is a player that I like. Will he cost a lot of money? That's for sure. Nobody would deny that. Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player," the Gunners chief told a press conference at the time.

Indeed, Arsenal would have to smash their club record transfer fee to bring Cavani to the Emirates Stadium, with a €63million minimum fee release clause in the player’s contract.
