Last season's failure to gain promotion from League One, due largely to a fantastic run of results from rivals Sheffield Wednesday, seemed a distant memory after Sheffield United's form in the first half of this season.

However, the failings that were so costly 12 months ago are beginning to emerge once again as the Bramall Lane club have fallen from a lofty top of the table position only a few weeks ago to struggling to hang on to the final play-off spot.

After suffering a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Coventry City on Friday night, United have not won in the league since Boxing Day. Danny Wilson's side have lost their last three league games at home, after having one of the best home records in the country during the first half of the season.

Last season Sheffield United's promotion challenge stalled around the same time as star striker Ched Evans was convicted of rape. This season has seen further problems in the striking department, but for wholly different reasons.

Top scorer Nick Blackman was sold to Reading in the January transfer window, a move that has sent out the wrong signals to supporters and increased the fear that this season's promotion push may also be derailed.

These supporters can see promotion slipping away once again and question marks over Wilson's future are starting to be whispered.

Yes, United have recruited in the transfer window but only time will tell whether these acquisitions will make a difference between now and May. The doubters are increasing in numbers and getting louder day by day.

Wilson will never be able to shake off his association with arch rivals Sheffield Wednesday but whilst the team are performing well United's supporters will forgive him for that.

Now that results and performances have slipped, Wilson is under pressure like never before. United must get on track fairly soon otherwise their encouraging start will have counted for nothing once again.
