£14m Arsenal striker chase hinges on Atletico Madrid superstar Radamel Falcao

Arsenal face a potential transfer battle with Atletico Madrid over the services of Spanish striker David Villa.

Arsene Wenger pursued the Barcelona star vigorously throughout the January transfer window, but failed to lure the 31-year-old to the Emirates Stadium.

Despite missing out last month, The Daily Express claims the Gunners chief still wants a forward who is proven in-front of goal, and could help the club challenge for silverware.

Villa certainly fits the bill, but Spanish newspaper AS claims that Atletico – currently second in La Liga – are showing an interest in the former Valencia star.

The publication goes on to claim that there is £14million price-tag on the player’s head, and a move to the Vicente Calderon stadium could hinge on Radamel Falcao, who is being linked with a move away from the club.

Villa is part of a ‘contingency plan’ in the capital if their Colombian striker leaves at the end of the season, according to the English paper, which could throw a major spanner in the works if Arsenal were to re-ignite their interest.

Olivier Giroud is the only senior striker currently available to Wenger in north London, although winger Theo Walcott has shown his ability through the middle when given the chance.

The 85-cap international would certainly add to the attacking threat at Arsenal if he were to join the Premier League outfit, but a move now appears to be anything but straight-forward.
