England striker Wayne Rooney has paid tribute to Arsenal duo Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott after last night’s 2-1 win over Brazil.
Rooney opened the scoring at Wembley, pouncing on a loose ball after keeper Julio Cesar saved Walcott’s initial shot. Wilshere slid in the winger to create the chance, and was named man of the match at the end of proceedings.
Fred equalised at the start of the second period for the Selecao, but veteran midfielder Frank Lampard scored the winner for Roy Hodgson’s side.
Rooney was understandably delighted with the result, and as well as picking out the Gunners pair, felt it was an excellent all-round display from the team.
“Great result last night and a confident team performance, especially Wilshere and Walcott who were brilliant,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.
“Now let’s take that into the qualifiers!”
England are back in action towards the end of March, with the Manchester United likely to play his part in San Marino and then Montenegro - two crucial 2014 World Cup qualifiers for the Three Lions.
Republic of Ireland then make the trip to Wembley for an international friendly in May, before England repay the favour to Brazil with a fixture in Rio de Janeiro at the start of the following month.
