Injury dropouts and the meaninglessness of results nearly always cause mid-season rounds of international friendlies to be extremely dull and offer little entertainment.
Not this week it seems – this week we were given a fantastic bundle of fixtures between some of world football’s most prestigious nations and they provided a raft of spectacular strikes.
In fact, there were so many quality goals, GiveMeFootball found it extremely difficult to narrow it down to a top five.
We did it though and are delighted to present to you, dear reader, the top five GMF International Goals of the Week:
Juan Carlos Garcia, Honduras v USA
They weren’t all friendlies, however, as this amazing bicycle kick was to level a Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier. A corner is hit too long by the home side, it was crossed back in, chested into the air in the area and slammed home by Garcia. An incredible goal – watch it here.
Frank Lampard, England v Brazil
The veteran Chelsea man has been dealing with speculation surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge, but he was thinking about nothing but the top corner of Julio Cesar’s goal at Wembley. A loose ball fell to him on the edge of the area and he simply guided it in off the top of the post – a classy finish to win the game 2-1. See it here.
Sami Khedira, Germany v France
Khedira’s finish was classy and calm but this goal was all about Mesut Ozil’s defence-splitting pass to set him up. Some players seem able to pick out a pass that nobody else can see and have the technique to put it on a plate. Ozil’s through ball for his Real Madrid teammate was perfect and brilliant. Have a look here.
Rasmus Elm, Sweden v Argentina
It wasn’t enough to save his side from defeat against Lionel Messi and co., but Elm’s free-kick was highly enjoyable. It appeared as though everyone, including the television cameras, were waiting for Sunderland’s dead-ball specialist Sebastian Larsson to hit it. Elm’s hit was clean and flew into the far corner. Have a look here.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal v Ecuador
The Real Madrid superstar could not prevent his side from defeat in Ecuador but he certainly pulled off the pick of the goals. His clubmate in Spain, Fábio Coentrão, play Ronaldo in with a classy little back-heel flick before the Portugal captain flicked it back over the head of a defender and buried it into the far corner. See another addition to the impressive Cristiano Ronaldo highlights reel here.
