Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is a major doubt for Saturday's Premier League trip to Sunderland because of a calf problem.

The 22-year-old was forced to withdraw from the Wales squad for Wednesday's friendly against Austria at the Liberty Stadium, returning to north London for treatment, and could miss this weekend's clash at the Stadium of Light.

Chelsea have refused to confirm reports they are set to perform a U-turn and offer Frank Lampard a contract extension.

The midfielder's deal at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer, and there have been few signs the club's hierarchy were willing to offer him improved terms, until speculation surfaced this morning suggesting the two parties were set to open talks over a new contract.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is back from the Africa Cup of Nations and ready for Premier League action once again.

Nigeria's 2-1 win over Ivory Coast freed up Toure to return to England, and he's now set to feature in Saturday's game at Southampton, as City attempt to cut Manchester United's nine-point lead at the top of the table.

Patrice Evra is aware that Manchester United are entering a crucial stage of the season when it comes to trophy chasing.

The Red Devils remain on course to repeat their treble-winning heroics of 1999, with Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup honours still up for grabs.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is ready to throw Emmanuel Adebayor straight back into action, as his first-team prepare to welcome Newcastle to White Hart Lane on Saturday.

The Portuguese tactician began his Spurs tenure with a 2-1 defeat at St James' Park, but with his side sitting fourth in the Premier League table, will be hoping for a better result this time around.

And finally, Barcelona president Sadro Rosell says European football clubs would be open to a winter World Cup.

The Catalan club's chief stipulated, however, that they would need several years to prepare for what would be a sweeping overhaul of club and international schedules.
