Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has lent his support to under-fire goalkeeper David De Gea, and backed the Spaniard to build on last weekend’s clean sheet against Fulham.

De Gea was named man-of-the-match as a Wayne Rooney goal proved to be the match-winner at Craven Cottage.

The former-Atletico Madrid keeper has been criticised in some sections of the media for a perceived weakness from crosses, and speculation has mounted that United could dip into the transfer market in the summer for a new shot-stopper. A move for Stoke City keeper Asmir Begovic has been suggested, while the Daily Mail reports that De Gea is thought to be a target for Atletico Madrid.

But Vidic believes United have their number one already, and admitted he wasn’t surprised by De Gea’s performance against Fulham last weekend.

“I think it’s hard for David because Edwin van der Sar was here for many years and set a high standard,” Vidic told MUTV. “Edwin was an experienced goalkeeper and it’s hard to replace him.

“David is a young goalkeeper, he’s 21. He’s maybe made one or two mistakes but that’s normal, everyone does that. I think people should have more understanding for that.

“David’s had some great games and I’m sure the more games he plays, the better he will become, no doubt.”

Next up for Manchester United is the visit of Everton. The Toffees scored four at Old Trafford last season to snatch a 4-4 draw, and David Moyes’s side dealt United their first loss of the season earlier this campaign.

And the fixture comes just days before Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad travel to the Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid in the glamour tie of the Champions League last-16 round.

Ferguson has already suggested he’s willing to rotate his squad to ensure his team are fresh for the two fixtures, but he made it clear he’s not happy with the Premier League TV scheduling.

Despite a mid-week Champions League fixture, United are scheduled to play at 4pm on Sunday – a fixture that will be shown live on TV.
