Jose Mourinho hopes to provide the watching public with the match the world is waiting for when Real Madrid host Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday.

The former Chelsea manager will pit his wits against Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson one again in the eagerly anticipated European encounter, as Cristiano Ronaldo faces his former club for the first time.

Ronaldo left Manchester United for Real Madrid in a record breaking transfer deal in the summer of 2009, and the Portugal captain's reunion with the Old Trafford club is one of several sub-plots to the most intriguing of ties.

Mourinho knows that both clubs have a duty to put on a show in this week's meeting at the Santiago Bernabeu, and is hopeful Real Madrid v Manchester United can live up to its billing.

"It’s such a big match," Mourinho told the official Manchester United website. "Everybody wants to play. Nobody will be tired.

"It’s a match the world is waiting for. They are not waiting for other matches in the Champions League. So I hope we can give the world of football what they’re waiting for."

The match in Madrid will be the 15th time a Mourinho team has faced Ferguson's Manchester United, with the latter having recorded just two successes, and the former feels privileged to come against the veteran Scot once again.

"We’ve had so many matches between us, with Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale and now with Real Madrid. In every club I meet Sir Alex. I’ve won games, I’ve lost, I’ve drawn," Mourinho added.

"[This time] I want to win and he wants to win. But I believe the loser, in the middle of being a bit sad, will have a little bit of space to feel a little bit happy because their friend has won."
