Manchester United & Liverpool will be on red alert after Ajax confirmed star playmaker Christian Eriksen has rejected talks over a new contract.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly a big admirer of the Denmark international, while the Anfield club are also credited with an interest in the report from Danish publication Sporten.

In the report Ajax director of football Marc Overmars reveals that Eriksen’s representatives have informed the Amsterdam club that he does not want to negotiate a new deal.

The former Holland international also said he thought Eriksen had done so to see what offers come in when the summer transfer window opens.

The news could prompt an offer from both Manchester United and Liverpool in the summer, as Eriksen’s current deal runs out in the summer of 2014 and he will be entering the final year of it this summer.

Overmars said“Christian has informed us [Ajax] that he does not want to sign a new contract right now", .

“I think he and his agent want to see what opportunities present themselves this summer.”

The 20-year-old has been improving rapidly at Ajax over the past few seasons and he has become integral to manger Frank de Boer.

However, a reality of life at the reigning Eredivisie champions is that more affluent European clubs inevitably snap up their best players.

Should Manchester United or Liverpool prove successful in their chase, Eriksen would provide an extra creative dimension to the midfield – an area both clubs have been criticised for lacking consistent quality in.
