Jack Butland admits he had to endure an 'awkward situation' or two while on England duty having just rejected the chance to secure a transfer to Chelsea in favour of a move to Stoke City.

Chelsea had agreed a fee for the transfer of Butland with Birmingham City, only for the teenage goalkeeper to reject the chance to speak to the Blues as he wanted a guarantee of regular first-team football.

With Petr Cech still very much Chelsea's No.1, and the highly-rated Thibaut Courtois on their books, the Stamford Bridge club were unable to offer Butland what he desired, and the 19-year-old instead signed for Stoke on deadline day.

A week later and Butland was forced to face up to his would-be Chelsea teammates during England's training camp before the meeting with Brazil, and the youngster says things were a tad uncomfortable when speaking to the likes of Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

Butland is, however, content with the decision he made, and will complete the season on loan with Birmingham before joining Stoke full-time in the summer transfer window.

"I had a bit of an awkward situation as a couple of the Chelsea players were asking me what the situation was," Butland told The Mirror.

"They were completely understanding with what I said, and that was that Chelsea are a fantastic club and I would have loved to have said ‘yes’ to them but I didn’t feel they could guarantee me first-team football as early as I would like.

"I didn’t feel it was the right move now so I simply said it wasn’t for me, thank you, and maybe we can do something in the future."
