Late strikes from Gareth McAuley and Romelu Lukaku saw West Bromwich Albion record a surprise 2-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
A classic smash and grab win saw the Baggies move ahead of their Merseyside opponents in the Premier League table, after a battling defensive display and some clinical finishing.
Goalkeeper Ben Foster produced heroics in the visitor’s goal, with a clean sheet leading to a deserved man of the match award.
Liverpool dominated the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to convert numerous opportunities that fell their way.
Jonjo Shelvey thought he had given the home side the lead but his strike was rued out for offside, before Steven Gerrard and Stewart Downing tested Foster with excellent long-range efforts.
Brendan Rodger’s team came closest before the break when West Brom defender Steven Reid almost turned the ball into his own goal, scooping the ball over from a Shelvey cross.
With the scores still level in the second half, West Brom began to play with a little more adventure as the game started to open up, but Steve Clarke’s side continued to frustrate Liverpool, with Foster continuing to impress with a string of superb saves.
And with 76 minutes on the clock, Foster was again the hero, producing a brilliant save to deny Gerrard from the penalty spot after Luis Suarez had gone down softly under a challenge from Jonas Olsson - the former Manchester United shot stopper diving low to his left to keep out the Liverpool captain.
Sensing the game was there for the taking, West Brom ventured forward, and after Youssouf Mulumbu saw his effort tipped wide for a corner, the visitors took the lead when Mcauley fired a powerful header past Pepe Reina to stun the Anfield crowd.
And, the Baggies secured victory in stoppage time, when substitute Lukaku finished neatly after a decisive break away.
The result sees West Brom move above Liverpool into eighth, ending a run of six games without a win, completing a season double of Liverpool in the process.
After an impressive performance by the returning Mulumbu, the midfielder posted on his official Facebook page: “Anfield: You'll never walk alone... I know, I'm back!! Vini Vidi Vinci. Come on Baggies.”
