Exclusive: Wayne Rooney on Cristiano Ronaldo & Real Madrid’s key players
Wayne Rooney talks Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid & preparing for a big game in exclusive interview with GiveMeFootball
In the final part of Wayne Rooney’s exclusive interview with GiveMeFootball for his official Facebook page, the Manchester United striker discusses the big threats posed by Real Madrid in the Champions League tonight – including Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese winger is expected to start for Jose Mourinho’s side at the Santiago Bernabeu, and will come up against Rooney for only the fourth time in his career after three previous meetings on the international stage.
This is their first clash in club football, and Rooney knows his friend will pose a big threat to the Red Devils in the last 16 of the European competition.
But, as he told GMF, it’s not just his former teammate who Manchester United have to be worried about…
You played with Cristano Ronaldo at Manchester United - what will it be like to come up against him?
I played with Cristiano for a number of years and he’s a fantastic player, him and Lionel Messi are the two stand out players in football today. He’s certainly the biggest threat for Real Madrid.
He’s an incredible talent and it will be tough to try and keep him quiet, and I’m sure if we can do that it’ll give us a better chance of getting the result we want.
Who do you see as the other key players in the Real Madrid squad?
Madrid have got a fantastic squad and great players all over the pitch so it’s going to be a very tough game.
Players like Alonso, Ozil and Benzema are all top, game-changing players who can punish you in different ways so we need to be ready and make sure we are at the top of our game.
How do you prepare for such a big game - do you do anything differently?
I prepare for all games the same, whether it’s a friendly, a Premier League game or a Champions League game. I want to win every game and just do my best, so the preparation will be the same and I won’t be doing anything different at all.
I usually like to picture the game the night before and think of the things I’d like to do and how I’d like the game to go, so I will be thinking of a Manchester United victory.
