Luigi dismisses Napoli bid for Tottenham striker target
Tottenham transfer news: Internacional striker Leandro Damiao is a reported target for Napoli
Internacional president Giovanni Luigi has rubbished reports suggesting Leandro Damiao could be on his way to Italy, revealing that Tottenham Hotspur were the only club to make a formal offer for the striker in January.
Sky Sports reports how the 23-year-old Brazilian international has emerged as one of the most sought-after attacking talents in world football, and as a result continues to generate speculation, even outside the transfer window.
Serie 'A' side Napoli are the latest club to be credited with an interest in signing Damiao, however, Luigi has dismissed the rumours, saying there is no substance to the reports.
"Are Napoli interested in him? No official proposal has been put to us," he told calciomercato.it. "With Italian clubs, there have only been informal chats."
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has been heavily linked with a move for the South American striker, and came close to bringing him to White Hart Lane last month.
It has been suggested that the Portuguese tactician will launch another bid for Damiao in the summer, with Tottenham's forward department thin on the ground at the moment.
Jermain Defoe is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, and Emmanuel Adebayor only recently returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, meaning Villas-Boas has been forced to utilise summer signing Clint Dempsey in a more advanced position than perhaps would have been initially anticipated.
Tottenham fans will hope that they have enough firepower to stay on course for Champions League qualification this season - an achievement that will surely strengthen their bid to bring Damiao to north London.
